The East Coast of the
United States is packed full of wonderful weekend destinations. So
when you and your significant other have a little extra time on your
hands, why not jet off for a weekend getaway filled with regional
foods, history, culture and more? It’s all readily available at a
number of Eastern hot spots — a few of our favorites are highlighted
below. And to those fortunate enough to live within driving distance,
get the most of your money by hitting the road to reach your weekend
getaway!
Cape Cod,
Massachusetts
You could easily turn this jaunt into a week’s vacation, but since
you’ve only got a few days, I might suggest you pick two or three
townships to explore. Sandwich has beautiful coastlines and is Cape
Cod’s oldest and most picturesque township. The island is full of
bike shops, so jump on and peddle the day away. Be sure to stop at one
of the many “seafood shacks” for delicious not-to-miss local
faire.
Atlantic City, New
Jersey
Be sure to bring a stash of cash when heading to Atlantic City! You
and your date can gamble the night away at one of the 13 casinos found
here, or take in a world-class headline entertainer. Be sure to leave
time to walk the four-mile boardwalk filled with shops, restaurants
and amusement rides. And for those of you who are a fan of Monopoly,
take a bus tour to see the streets that made Monopoly famous.
Washington, D.C.
If you like history and a great nightlife, this is the city for you.
When traveling to Washington be sure to book a hotel on the Metro line
so you can get around the town by subway — it’s inexpensive, clean
and safe. The Smithsonian museums are full of intriguing exhibits —
there’s American history, space, natural history, and a portrait
gallery to name a few. And when you’re done browsing the museums,
head to Georgetown for great restaurants and a wild nightlife.
Outer Banks, North
Carolina
To get away from your daily grind, head to the relaxing shores of
Outer Banks, North Carolina. This 100-mile long island boasts some of
the best East Coast fishing, so sign up for a charter and cast your
lines for a fishing adventure. And for the daring, take in a hang
gliding lesson at Jockey’s Ridge, a 140-foot natural sand dune. Just
down the road, visit Kill Devil Hill — home of the famous Wright
Brothers inaugural flight. And of course, enjoy the beautiful beaches
and shorelines.
