Act I, Scene I: The house party
The party appears to be a success. Dozens of trendy-looking men women in provocative attire are chatting and flirting; a few are gyrating self-consciously in the corner. Everyone seems to be having a good time... except for you.

You're starting to feel like the ugly duckling. You came here hoping to find a beautiful swan, but you haven't even managed to get within squawking distance. The problem lies in deciding how to strike up a conversation. How do you begin without sounding cheesy or friendless? Though you're sure people would like you if they just gave you a chance, how do you signal that you are available?

Act I, Scene II: By the bar
Having mustered your courage, you've made the metamorphosis from wallflower to social butterfly. You've brazenly introduced yourself to several people who seem like they wouldn't bite your face off. Remember, they're your ticket: Their function is to show everyone else in the room that you are available to chat.

As soon as you can, you exhibit social promiscuity by jumping conversational circles; you want people to know that you're open for business. Let's face it: You're looking for love potential. Someone tells a joke and you laugh loudly, watching surreptitiously to see whose attention you may be attracting. Your eyes periodically scan the room, and when you spot someone whom you think you might fancy, you maneuver yourself closer in order to gauge whether they seem to notice you back.

A bold look and a smile are your most effective tools; they make you friendly and approachable and tell others that you find them appealing. If women interest you, a slightly introspective demeanor takes the threatening edge off your masculinity. And don't be put off by a touch of reserve. If she glances at you, looks away and then glances again with a shy smile, you're golden.

On the other hand if it's a loving man you're after, lead with your body. Like it or not, that's what brings men in the door. Touch your hair; adjust your clothes; cross and re-cross your legs. When speaking with a man, tilt your head slightly to the side. Move closer when possible, touching him lightly on the arm for emphasis.

Act I, Scene III: On the couch
Finally you've landed a potential partner; now's the time to reveal your single status. But don't just come out and say it; casually bring the conversation around to the topic. Mention activities you'd like to pursue and movies you'd like to see as a way of signaling that you are looking for someone to share your free time. When referring to events that have taken place in the past, make sure to say "I" instead of "we," even if you experienced those events with an ex. Your language conveys the idea that you've walked through life alone, saving yourself for the true love that possibly sits a few inches from you on the couch.

Act I, Scene IV: At the door
As your new friend prepares to depart, now is the moment of truth. Flashing your most disarming smile, ask, "I'd like to see you again. Can I get your phone number?" If they demur, head back to the bar for a repeat of Act I, Scene II. After all you have nothing to lose, and it's usually easier the second time around. And if he or she says "Yes," get ready for Act II!
