Act I, Scene I: The
house party
Coco Helado, Match.com
The party appears to be a success. Dozens of trendy-looking men women in provocative attire are chatting and flirting; a few are gyrating self-consciously in the corner. Everyone seems to be having a good time... except for you. You're starting to feel like the ugly duckling. You came here hoping to find a beautiful swan, but you haven't even managed to get within squawking distance. The problem lies in deciding how to strike up a conversation. How do you begin without sounding cheesy or friendless? Though you're sure people would like you if they just gave you a chance, how do you signal that you are available? Act I, Scene II:
By the bar As soon as you can, you exhibit social promiscuity by jumping conversational circles; you want people to know that you're open for business. Let's face it: You're looking for love potential. Someone tells a joke and you laugh loudly, watching surreptitiously to see whose attention you may be attracting. Your eyes periodically scan the room, and when you spot someone whom you think you might fancy, you maneuver yourself closer in order to gauge whether they seem to notice you back. A bold look and a smile are your most effective tools; they make you friendly and approachable and tell others that you find them appealing. If women interest you, a slightly introspective demeanor takes the threatening edge off your masculinity. And don't be put off by a touch of reserve. If she glances at you, looks away and then glances again with a shy smile, you're golden. On the other hand if it's a loving man you're after, lead with your body. Like it or not, that's what brings men in the door. Touch your hair; adjust your clothes; cross and re-cross your legs. When speaking with a man, tilt your head slightly to the side. Move closer when possible, touching him lightly on the arm for emphasis. Act I, Scene III:
