We're all looking for
Prince Charming. But have we kissed enough frogs to find him?
Sure, I'd like to find my perfect mate, but when I reflect back on my long-term relationships, I realize I never dated anyone "perfect." Not for lack of trying. Still, some of the frogs I've dated turned out to be princes. So when I start to write a profile, I remember that there is a difference between what I "want" and what I "need." Some things I can live without, while others I can't. Some things are negotiable. I ask myself: What do I "need" from a mate? Does he have to have movie-star looks or stunning generosity? The men I've been involved with, who made me the happiest, didn't espouse all these qualities. They had some, but not all. How could I expect a perfect mate?My profile reads like I'd placed my right hand on the Bible while writing it. Yet some of the ones I read looked like they'd made a deal with the Devil — sold their souls to become so perfect! It was obvious why some of these men couldn't find a date: How many men have 2% (or less) body fat, all their own (non-dyed, non-gray) hair and an income over $150,000 a year? Okay, so I detest perfect queens who live in their perfect worlds and seek perfect boyfriends. I wonder how these self-avowed gods ever find any other self-avowed gods to date. What if one should get a pimple or a wart? Would one queen have to abdicate or risk being dethroned? I want to tell them, "Get a clue. You're not perfect. You live in an imperfect world — and if you don't come down off your throne, you'll be ruling your queen-dom alone for a lifetime." Welcome to the real world.Real men are imperfect. They belch, pass gas, make mistakes, lose their hair and grow guts. Thankfully, there are real men who want to date real men — not just moan about not being able to find their fantasy guy. There are men with realistic expectations — like me — who are looking for a caring, decent man to date and eventually love. No gods for us. Just frogs that will eventually become our princes.
