So you’ve made dinner reservations, managed to snag a pair of tickets that were next to impossible to get, wracked your brain for witticisms and maybe even taken out that suit you once reserved for weddings and funerals. Why shouldn’t you assume that this first date will go smoothly? Two words: Murphy’s Law. But even though everything that can go wrong will go wrong, take heart.

Any first date also could end up as the last date, but there’s a simple way for men to increase their chances of making it to date #2. Along with a head full of positive attitude, basic listening skills and a little sincerity, do yourself a huge favor and remember to bring these other essential tools:

  1. Breath mints and cologne
Nothing turns a perfectly promising first date into a real stinker faster than body odor. Sparing your date the garlic prawns you indulged in at lunch or your body's unfortunate reaction to a steamy summer evening can be the difference between receiving an evening full of kisses and just a kiss-off.

  2. At least one prop
Uncomfortable silence can be unavoidable and dangerous on a first date. But a few strategically placed visual icebreakers can help jump-start a lagging conversation in danger of turning into a date killer. Whether it’s a special flower for your date or just your favorite hat, incorporate some small but unique items into the way you present yourself, especially if there is a personal story that goes along with them.

  3. Extra money
Although it may be true that money can't buy you love, it sure comes in handy when making a down payment. Regardless of initial plans, reserve some money, including cash, for dates that you think might have real possibilities.

  4. A travel toothbrush
Not just for the road anymore, a pocket-sized dental arsenal may very well keep you, your dentist and your date smiling. Equally effective both after dinner and maybe the morning after, excusing yourself to step away for a quick brush can be your best weapon in the close quarters of a first date.

  5. A mobile phone or pager
Whether your date is shaping up to be a love connection or a dropped call, a little technology could be crucial to getting what you want. In a good situation, the time you’ve spent programming restaurant and taxi company numbers into your phone can make you look like a hero and take you to the next level. On the other hand, if things go bad, a strategically placed call or page prompted from a friend can help cut a bad date mercifully short.
