| What Makes a Great First Date? |
|
There's a saying in the north of England that there's nowt so queer as folk and if you're involved in dating that saying may well ring true. After a few dates with complete goons you may well be asking yourself if you'll ever click with someone again. There's another saying that you can please some of the people some of the time, but not all of the people all of the time. It's certainly true that trying to please by thinking of a great date can be the most stressful and anxious time. Going bowling with someone who can't aim, sitting in a cinema with a continuous sniffer, eating out with a vegan...there's no end apparently to the minefield of possibilities for it all to go wrong. No wonder a lot of us choose to stay at home with Sky. However there are a few ground rules to make the chances of success more likely. Ways to avoid dull question and answer sessions, false humour, forced conversation while you look at your watch. Great dates are quite often totally unplanned and come out of conversations that have nothing to do with making arrangements to see each other. For that reason it's always a good idea to spend as much time as you need on the phone or email so you have a pretty good impression of what you're letting yourself in for first. Photos and profiles are all very well but it's the person within who's important - unless,of course, all you want to do is head for the bedroom(even then it can be a pretty unsatisfying experience). Planning too much can ruin what should be a natural and stress free occasion, as can trying to pack too much in. Meeting for an hour for a coffee or a walk in the park is much less likely to go wrong than the theatre followed by a posh dinner. Who knows, that coffee or walk could open up into something much bigger if you like each other. If not, at least you can take your leave without too much embarrassment. Many people go through agonies wondering what they're going to talk about. They imagine huge silences and wanting the ground to swallow them up as a result. Avoid this by thinking beforehand of some simple questions to ask that will get the other person to open up and talk about themselves. What would you like to be asked yourself? Open ended questions usually set off loads of different conversations that you'll really enjoy. Another tactic that relaxes both you and your date is the simple smile. Most people have pretty blank faces naturally and this can give off an impression of boredom or discomfort. So work on that mind blowing mouth watering smile of yours!
