Dating on a budget
doesn't have to mean going on a "cheap" date. There are some
great ways to get to know your new special someone that won't put you
or your date in the poorhouse. And with the current uncertain economy,
getting more bang from less buck just makes good common cents.
1. Color me local
Every area in the country has a special place, known for its scenic
beauty, its funky tourist area, its annual frog-jumping festival or
Sweet Potato parade. Be a tourist in your own town. Enjoy the free
street fairs or parades, the gingerbread house contests. It's often
camp; it's often corny, but the kitsch is what makes it so much fun
when you do it on a date.
2. Romance is a
beach
If you're lucky enough to live near the ocean, there are few more
romantic — and cost-effective — venues than the beach. Pack
sunscreen, a cooler and a blanket, and you can have a day of fun that
costs virtually nothing.
3. A loaf of
bread, a jug of wine, and…
… your favorite picnic companion. A picnic lunch in a scenic spot is
a great place for communing with nature and your charming date.
4. Museum mojo
Not only is a trip to a nearby museum very low-cost, but it also
provides ready-made conversation pieces.
5. Off the beaten
path
Botanical gardens and even some of the better flower nurseries are a
gorgeous backdrop for a great day. A plant or flower from the place
you visit makes a really nice forget-me-not souvenir.
6. Sweets for the
sweet
Sharing a dessert costs less money and delivers fewer calories than a
big, splashy full-course meal. Besides, there's something about
sharing an ice cream sundae that brings out the kid in all of us.
7. Animal
magnetism
Get back to basics with a date at the local zoo. Not only is it very
easy on the budget, but each exhibit offers so much to talk about
you'll never have to worry about awkward silence.
8. Dinner and a
movie… at home
Do you share a favorite TV show in common? Make this show night a
special one with plenty of popcorn and old-fashioned snuggling. If you
can cook, homemade meals are less costly, less hassle and far more
romantic than lavish meals in expensive restaurants. "I never
cook for a man unless I'm sure I want him," says Marlene, a
single friend, "because after I cook, I never can get rid of
him."
9. Music, music,
music
Many cities offer a roster of free concerts in the park. Pack a
blanket, a snack, something cool to drink, and you're set for hours.
10. The sporting
life
If the weather and location allows, there are plenty of low-cost ways
to combine exercise with romance. If you like to hike, hike. If you
like to bike, bike. Skating, surfing and even mall-walking can be far
more pleasant when you do it with someone special.
Now you have to find
the special someone to enjoy all these great ideas. Search
for local singles today and make your first date this weekend!
